ABOUT
I was invited to create the main title and the intro of the pilot episode of the short animation "Desventuras Espaciais". The Brazilian authors of this animation were the same as the animation series "Boris e Rufus" which is exhibited on TV, cable, and streaming, and translated into several languages.
BRIEFING
Create a visual identity that reflects the universe of the series. The name and the story of the series refer to "messy" adventures that take place in space. There is a theme related to the exploration of the unknown, the love of science and the friendship between the main characters (children). The identity must be perceived as fun, adventurous and technological. The aesthetic needs to resemble the art direction of the pilot episode.
About the animation
Zoe, Dante and Luc are the only children aboard the Argos II space colony, which is in Earth's orbit. Despite being as different as the common squid and the Venusian squid, the three become friends and decide to form a secret club, even though they are unable to agree on its name and purpose. Living among adults busy with preparations for the long journey in search of a habitable planet beyond the solar system, they try to discover what it is like to be children, while having to save the universe from its own confusions.
Pre-production
First things first, I analysed all the content produced (storyline, characters profile, visual assets) so I could absorb the vibe of the animation, and the target audience. From all this material I could extract the color palette, and the graphic style to develop the identity of the logo and the intro.
Another important step was to research and create a visual board with logos (still and animated) from a variety of movies, tv shows, and animations that could somehow be similar to the universe of this short animation. And most important, use that information to create something that is unique from all the others.
Process
The hands-on begins when I sketched the copy "Desventuras Espaciais" in many lettering styles on my sketchbook. The art director chose three main concepts, still in pencil, so I could work better in digital with colors. After a lot of exploration, one of the three concepts was chosen, so I could design the final lettering.
So, while I was doing the sketches, I was already thinking about the animation itself. Then, there's an important step that was the storyboard. Some ideas were sketched but one stood out. The full animation was done in Adobe After Effects.
The Idea
We came up with an idea that would bring a superhero vibe. But for this story, we have three kids as heroes exploring the space.
The design has a dynamic and bold style. The design was made thinking about the animation and intro. That way the element of exploration of the universe is presented with a comet that draws a path that becomes the letter "S", like a signature.
For the intro, we needed to have some frames or scenes from the episode, the main title, and the credits.
But we wanted to create some kind of story to link all these elements. So, technology was the concept that we chose to be present in all aspects of the intro. For this, we brought a light projecting a digital map on a screen. Then many other screens keep appearing, first with the main characters and then with scenes of the episode. A looping background full of pixels flickering is the universe that gathers all the elements.
After a few clips of scenes in full screen, an animation reveals the main title and the creators' names.
